How It Works

A conventional trainer narrows to a point at the front, sits your heel higher than your toes, and wraps your foot in a stiff sole that does the bending for you. Barestep Active does the opposite on all three counts: a toe box the width of your actual foot, the heel and forefoot level with each other, and a thin flexible sole your foot can bend through.

You wear them like any other shoe. What changes is that your foot is doing the work instead of the shoe.

Your Foot Was Never Shaped Like Your Shoe

Take off your sock and look at your foot: it's widest at the toes. Now look at the shoe you just took off, which narrows to a point. Your toes have been spending all day folded into that shape.

Barestep Active is built around the foot instead of around the shoe — wide at the front, level from heel to toe, and flexible enough to move with you.

  • A toe box as wide as your foot

Your toes sit side by side instead of stacked into a point. It's the difference you notice at hour eight, not hour one.

  • A sole that bends where you bend

Thin and flexible enough to roll up in one hand, so your foot flexes through its own joints. A rigid sole does that job for you, which is why it stops your foot doing it at all.

  • Level from heel to toe

No raised heel tipping you forward, so you stand the way you stand barefoot. The breathable upper and grippy outsole keep it wearable for a normal day.

Start Slow, Then Forget About Them

Wear them like any other shoe — but if you've spent years in cushioned trainers, build up over two to four weeks rather than switching overnight. An hour or two a day at first, then longer as your feet adapt.

Mild calf and arch soreness early on is normal; sharp pain in the foot is your signal to back off for a few days. Machine washable, and they air dry fast.

    30-Day Comfort Guarantee

We stand by our products with a 30-day risk-free guarantee. If you're not completely thrilled with your order, simply return it for a full refund (no questions asked).

    Who These Shoes Are For

The one on their feet all day

Nurses, teachers, warehouse floors, kitchens. By mid-afternoon your toes are numb and you're shifting your weight around. Width at the front is the thing that changes that. The one who's tried every insole

Gel pads, arch supports, a more expensive trainer, and none of it stuck. This goes the other direction — less shoe rather than more, so your own foot does the work. The one training for something

Lifting, gym work, hiking. A thin flat sole puts you closer to the ground, which is exactly what you want under a squat rack and nowhere near a marathon in week one. Lifting, gym work, hiking. Frequently Asked Questions

    help

What actually makes these different from normal trainers?

Three things: the toe box is as wide as your foot instead of tapering to a point, the heel sits level with the forefoot instead of raised, and the sole is thin and flexible instead of thick and rigid. Everything else about wearing them is the same as any other shoe.

    help

How do I switch over without hurting myself?

Gradually. If you've worn cushioned shoes for years, your calves, arches and the small muscles in your feet have had a lot of work done for them, and they need a few weeks to take it back on. Start with an hour or two a day and build up over two to four weeks. Going straight to full days or long runs is the single most common way people end up sore or injured.

    help

Will they help with bunions, plantar fasciitis or foot pain?

We can't promise that, and we won't. What we can tell you is the mechanism: a wide toe box takes pressure off the side of the big toe joint rather than pressing into it, and a flexible sole lets the foot muscles work. Plenty of people find that helps. But these are shoes, not a treatment, and if you have a diagnosed foot condition, diabetes or nerve damage in your feet, talk to your doctor or podiatrist before switching — reduced underfoot protection matters a lot if you can't feel an injury.

    help

How do I pick my size?

Measure your foot rather than going by the size you usually buy. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark heel and longest toe, measure in centimetres and match it to the size chart — you want about a centimetre of room in front of your longest toe. If you're between sizes or have wide feet, size up.

    help

Can I run, train or hike in them?

Gym and lifting work is where a flat, thin sole is an advantage straight away, because you're stable and close to the ground. Running and hiking are fine too, but only once you've done the transition — start with short distances on forgiving ground and build from there.

    help

What about cold or wet weather, and how do I clean them?

The upper is breathable rather than waterproof and the sole is thin, so these are built for mild and dry conditions more than deep winter. Thicker toe socks help in the cold. They're machine washable on a cool cycle — air dry them, don't put them in the tumble dryer.
